What makes me laugh about fan 'games'

Or more so the people that make most of them. On deviantART I follow progress on a lot of fan games. But in truth the people that lead them don't know the first thing about game development, bar a few. About the only "game developers" I respect on dA are Neo-DragonCP, Hydrargirium, SailorVicious,  and iametrine. There's a few up and coming developers who are actually doing great too such as RianSky and Elaynii and people so dedicated such as AtomicReactor. No offence to any other game leaders, but anyone else I've seen has never striked me as a developer. All that I see these days are screen mock-ups and promises. Promises about "new regions, new pokemon, new features, amazing battles, swift characters, flawless GUI's", but the thing is, the people who make these things don't know what to do when it comes to actually making them happen in a game. That would be all well and good if they could admit to the fact they know fuck all about what it is to be a developer, but the thing is, they're often so arrogant that they look down on others because their "games" don't look as "pretty" as theirs. It's very disgusting that this community of developers I see have all become about the popularity and the acclaim that comes with the hype of a game that will never be released. Not by their talents anyway.

I can guarantee you that I'll get some replies from people saying they agree, but they'll be the exact kind of developers I'm talking about. They're blind to their own lack of abilities. You see, you can be a very talented artist, or a very talented scripter, or even a very talented writer, but it takes more than a single skill to be a game developer. In my time as a developer over the past few years I've taught myself to map, draw, sprite, write, program, event and design. Because what I know, is that no matter how much you rely on a team; it's always gotta be you who leads. And a team isn't going to respect you for long if you can only do one thing. Otherwise you're just taking all the credit for what is mostly all their work, all you're doing is pointing and going back into your bubble of talent.

Again, you can be extremely talented in one area, but so long as you don't even get an understanding of other aspects of developing a game you may as well just be a team member. The term "game leader" is thrown around way too much. That's why we have so many fan-games. People don't understand what it actually takes to do what they want to do.

I'm aware I've halted development on my own game right now, but I will never stop working on it. It's gotten me too many things in return. But we all need time away from working hard, no? Regardless. I'm a team leader, and the people I mentioned are, and perhaps some people I watch whom I've forgotten. But most people are just team members directing a game.

Edit: In no way am I upset or annoyed by this all, really. I find it sad but humorous if anything. So don't send me down the river or write an essay about how I can get over it haha. Also this is not aimed at newbies/rookies, not at all.

I just read this.
I'm always, well try to be, honest about the game and whatnot. I'm still learning. And this project that i'm doing is helping me learn along the way. Because of this project, I'm better with overworlds, somewhat better with trainer sprites, and still learning how to map but getting better.

I always point out that I know my project isn't as good as others. These days I see people flocking over to someones new Hoenn remake, because everyone just has to have a Hoenn Remake. I know already I'm not a good team leader because I don't have what it takes to be a good leader. This project, however, is helping me learn how to be a good leader along the way.
