Especially on a Winter's evening... by CallMeGav Especially on a Winter's evening... by CallMeGav
Phoenix Rising is back! And I've been working hard with ~TyranitarDark making some new areas. So this is one of three I'm uploading tonight.

Note that the PokéStrap is not included in these screens, simply because I'm showing off the area and basically too lazy to play through the game to the point where you receive it, just for screenshots :p

Enjoy!

Other areas worked on during this update:

The textbox loooks lovely. Is it always going to be close to the characters' head? I mean, like to do different distances like in BW.

For now, I have just got speech bubbles, but perhaps in time I'll have other methods of displaying such bubbles. :]

You could perhaps add some falling snow to this area (Essentials already comes with that). The map/screenshot looks great! The tiles are perfect. Did you manage to find a coder then?

I've been considering changing how the snow looks and behaves in Essentials, so I left it out for the moment. Also because the way it tints the screen makes it kind of bright and you lose some detail.

Not yet, just been trying to handle things to the best of my ability, getting the engine running properly and such. Too hard to simply depend on someone coming along haha.

You can easily change the weather animation, so that there is no tint (PokemonFieldWeather line 177).

Looks nice Gav! Is the speech bubble coded in or digitally added?

Yep coded, one for right, left, up and down. I want to improve it though so that the bubble only wraps around the words displayed, rather than being a set height and width every time. If that makes sense!

Oh it does! In my game I have the traditional BW speech bubble, but I am going to Pizzazz it up and add some newer features. I like this style too! You an Luka are the only ones I have see to make this style work and look good!

The only critique I have is: I think it would be more visually pleasing if you centered the text.

Regarding your suggestion, I'll give it a go and see how it looks with longer speeches, thanks for the comments :]

Did you code this or did someone else do it for you?

Rafa did it back when he was with the project. I've only made adjustments.

OK, thanks for clearing up my suspicions :) The maps look good, was watching your Live stream making them lol. Wonder if you can guess the user name :P

Hmmm, it isn't as easy as that though. You need to take into account, also the events which are not directly next to the player, the bubble should also be tracking the events across the whole map. Another thing, I wouldn't agree with having varied sizes of the bubble, limiting it to a set width and height is better, as that way, if the sentence were to be too long, the bubble wouldn't be cut off by the edges of the screen, but would scroll nicely instead (much like they did in BW).

You could have a global variable which registers the event's ID, and then utilize $game_map.events[id].x/y functions.

That's the way I have it actually, set with with scrolling too. I use [UB] in the event name for bubbles going upwards, [DB] for ones going down, and same for left and right with [LB] and [RB] in the event name.

Hmmm :/ But what happens if the event name has [UB] but you're to its left? You can have something like $game_player.x - $game_map.events[id].x, and then compare the value. If it's positive you'd apply the [LB] method, and if negative the [RB]. I think that would be more efficient as the bubble would become a variable, which would correspond correctly to the Player - Event positioning.

Interesting map; my only complaint is the lack of the amount of trees with snow on them.
